Circumference: Spence High School
The SCHOOL COLORS awareness and fundraising campaign was launched in September, 2009 as a creative way to get students to celebrate their school pride, while spreading the Circle of Women message. After founding the NYC Circle of Women Chapter, Alli Ruben implemented SCHOOL COLORS as her first project at her school in New York City. Students, teachers, and administrators support the CoW mission by purchasing braided sailor-knot rope bracelets in Circle of Women and Spence school colors: blue and yellow. By wearing their bracelets, people show how they value their own education, while also raising awareness about the gender gap in access to education that prohibits girls from receiving proper schooling.
Alli partnered SCHOOL COLORS with Nantucket Knots to make the bracelets. All money raised is donated to building a security wall around the school in Wonkhai, Afghanistan. The wall will ensure the girls’ safety and increase the probability of greater student attendance. SCHOOL COLORS is expanding to new schools. If you want to start a SCHOOL COLORS campaign in your high school please contact Alli Ruben at alli@schoolcolorsusa.org.
The Spence High School chapter also threw a successful bake sale in the spring ‘10!
